KSBR Oy has handed off two completed substations in Helsinki’s Vanhakaupunki and Vantaa’s Länsisalmi to Finland’s transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj. The substations are situated at both ends of the transmission system’s new 400-kilovolt cable connection.

Fingrid is working in collaboration with the City of Helsinki and Helen Electricity Network in establishing a cable connection with Helsinki to meet the growing electricity demand in the capital region. 

Completed in October, the Vanhakaupunki substation building included a concrete-framed GIS area, technical facilities, a cast-in-situ transformer building, and a star point. 

Meanwhile, a new transformer bunker was completed in Länsisalmi. Changes were also made to their old GIS area during the project. 

“The work was completed on schedule thanks to an excellent team of site managers and workers. Our strengths in these kinds of projects are expertise, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. A big thank you also to our reliable subcontractor and cooperation network,” says Henry Nyman, Construction Manager at KSBR. 

“Our work with Fingrid has also been fair, easy, and straightforward. Decisions were made quickly and without any unneeded delays.” 

Nyman describes the project, which began in spring 2024, as an ambitious one. At its busiest, approximately 20 KSBR workers and three staff members were at work on the sites. 

The total value of the contract, including earthworks and technical building services, is approximately €8.7 million. 

“We got what we needed”

Planning for the extensive transmission system project began in 2020, and the connection will be finished in 2026. 

“Our cooperation with KSBR has been effective. We got what we needed, when we needed it,” sums up Fingrid Project Manager Jarmo Henttinen. 

KSBR’s work on the sites will continue next spring. 

“That’s when we’ll finish up our part of the transformer station facade, asphalting, and outdoor work,” states Henry Nyman.
