KSBR is the first contractor to break ground on the long-awaited Hipposkeskus project – “We feel privileged”
KSBR (Keski-Suomen Betonirakenne Oy) began construction on a parking facility adjacent to Hipposkeskus, in Jyväskylä, on December 1, 2025.
Last spring, KSBR reached agreement on a turnkey contract worth approximately €15.5 million with Hippos Ky. The contract includes everything from the structural and HVAC design of the parking facility to earthworks, facades, building services, and sports center structures.
“We feel privileged that we were able to be the first contractor to break ground on such a huge project – even on an international scale. It’s great that the entire project has finally gotten underway,” says Marko Koskinen, Project Manager at KSBR.
At an estimated cost of €210 million, the Hipposkeskus project includes a parking facility as well as fitness, training, and ice sports centers, divided between several different contractors.
The launch of the project has long been delayed due to years of appeals.
A fascinating challenge
The parking facility, dubbed Hippos-Parkki, includes some special features. For example, the building includes an exercise room and technical facilities serving the sports center.
“There are many connected structures involved, which makes the site a challenge, but fascinating at the same time.”
KSBR will carry out earthworks in December, and the contract will proceed to piling and foundation structures in 2026.
“The goal is to have the frame completely up by fall 2026. We’re aiming to streamline schedules by overlapping our work phases in blocks. We thought through that already during the planning stage,” states Koskinen.
The 6-story building will include over 710 parking spaces and a gross area of approximately 20,000 square meters. The space is 120 meters in length.
Koskinen estimates the parking facility will be partially operational by spring 2027. KSBR will complete its part of the contract by the end of March 2026.
