KSBR signs contracts for two battery energy storage projects

KSBR (Keski-Suomen Betonirakenne Oy) and Wood & Company have signed agreements for the construction of battery energy storage systems in Laukaa and Äänekoski, Finland. Winda Energy, a company specializing in renewable energy solutions, acts as the developer and project owner.

KSBR will serve as the main contractor for both projects, being responsible for all civil works and electrical installations, as well as the delivery of substations and main transformers.

The battery energy storage facility in Laukaa will have a capacity of 45 MW/90 MWh, while the Äänekoski site will feature a 30 MW/60 MWh system. The delivery includes battery containers, transformers, and substations.

Design work has commenced immediately, and earthworks at both sites will begin in early summer. Electrical installations are scheduled for late winter 2027.

– Our work on these projects is expected to be completed by early summer 2027, says Janne Somero, project manager at KSBR.

– We have collaborated with Winda for several years and delivered multiple projects together. It is great to continue working with their highly professional organization, says Janne Kananen, business director for energy and infrastructure at KSBR.

According to Janne Kananen of KSBR, demand for battery energy storage remains strong.

Four battery storage projects underway

Following this latest agreement, KSBR now has four battery energy storage projects ongoing. In addition to Laukaa and Äänekoski, projects are also underway in Kauhava and Soini.

– In Finland, renewable energy already accounts for a significant share of total electricity production. Frequency reserves are essential for balancing the grid, and the strong demand in the frequency reserve market is currently driving rapid growth in battery storage projects, Kananen explains.

Local expertise plays a key role

KSBR executes battery energy storage projects largely using its own earthworks capacity and personnel, enabling efficient project start-up.

– Cooperation with KSBR’s experienced team during the project preparation phase was extremely effective, and the projects were launched on a tight schedule, says Iko Järnberg, chief technical officer at Winda Energy.

According to the client, local expertise is critical to the successful delivery of such projects.

– We are very familiar with both locations, and we are known as a reliable, high-quality partner even under demanding timelines, Kananen adds, reflecting on the criteria that led to the contract award.
